Policy Alert From the Office of Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance (COVA)

Policy Alert – this is VERY important for Colorado.  Here is something you can do to help solve cases that have gone cold.  Please email these Senators and tell them how you feel about this very important issue.  For instance in our daughter Morgan’s case – both of her stalkers/murderers had criminal histories, if they had had their DNA collected at the time of their arrests then their DNA would be in the database.  The DNA database will help solve so many cold cases and get repeat offenders off our streets and locked away, where they can no longer hurt other innocent victims. Please use your voice on this very important issue.  Thanks!

Collection of a DNA Sample from Offenders Convicted of
Certain Misdemeanors Against Vulnerable Persons
DNA is currently taken upon conviction of misdemeanor crimes that are sexual. This bill extends the list to include certain misdemeanor crimes, especially those committed against women and children. Collection would still only occur upon conviction of the crime, meaning that no person’s DNA sample would be taken until they were found to be guilty.
There are currently over 6,100 unmatched forensic samples in the Colorado DNA database. These crimes include murders and rapes, the majority of which are committed against women and children. Expanding the DNA database allows for law enforcement to be able to find criminals responsible for those crimes.
What we need from you

The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, March 2 at 1:30 p.m.
If you support the intentions of this bill, there are several members of the Senate Judiciary that need to hear from you before then!
Senator Irene Aguilar (D-Denver)
303.866.4852
Senator Mike Merrifield (D-Colorado Springs)
303.866.6364
Senator Kevin Lundberg (R-Berthoud)
303.866.4853
Please consider calling or emailing these Colorado Senators and telling them why you support SB16-075 and why you’d like them to vote in favor of this important legislation!

Another milestone – Over 6 million views from around the world!

care

Just the other day this blog hit another milestone…the amount of views went over the 6 million mark.  I would never have imagined this when I first started this blog.

I am so happy that over 6 million people in over 115 countries have read this blog.  I have always wanted to share Morgan’s story in order to allow people to understand who she really is and to show exactly what happened to her.  Bad things do happen to good people and it isn’t right, but unfortunately it happens…much too often.

I also felt that there was a huge need for people to understand what they are up against when dealing with a stalker.  All stalkings are different and yet in many respects they are the same.  You need to be educated about the laws on stalking, how to build a case, what to do to protect yourself, and much more, so this blog was also my attempt to raise awareness.  To my surprise many thousands of people have read this website and blog and written in over the years to share their stories of terror.   They have asked for help, suggestions, referrals, and much more having to do with their current ongoing stalking.  My heart goes out to them all – I really wish people understood the gravity of the situation when it comes to stalking, and how very dangerous stalking is.

I have been asked if I think there is a solution – I do not believe you can ever stop a stalker from stalking – they never stop, but I believe there are solutions.  Solutions that will save more victims, and put more criminals behind bars so they don’t keep reoffending.  This can be done with stronger laws, more education for the general public, as well as law enforcement, and accountability when it comes to upholding the stalking laws that are already on the books.  Communication is extremely important, as well as the information about organizations and programs that currently do exist that can help these victims.

Turning a blind eye to a problem in society does not make that problem go away – it only succeeds in allowing the problem to grow worse.  So do I think there is a solution to stalking? Yes, if something is possible, and I do believe it is possible, then I believe we can succeed in making that possibility a reality. We can all do our part in raising awareness and insisting on these changes being made.  Great changes for the good of all have been made over the years, not because people gave up or ignored the injustice, no, great changes have been made because people cared – so we now continue to push on in order to be a catalyst for change.

Just the other day a person wrote in to thank me for all the information that I have put out there for others to read.  She said she keeps sharing it with others.  My reply to her was, “Every little comment, every little thing people do causes a ripple effect, which in turn changes the course of history. Maybe it only changes things for the better for one person, or maybe it changes things for the better for many people, either way it helps and so you are doing something wonderful just being who you are. You are raising awareness and you are a truth seeker. Thank you for being you.”  I would like all of you that have been reading and sharing this blog to know that YOU ARE ALL MAKING A POSITIVE CHANGE in this world, whether it is by raising awareness just for one person or many, or maybe by just understanding that you need to listen to and believe, a relative, friend, neighbor or co-worker when they confide in you that they are being stalked – I thank you all for reading, sharing and caring.

Again in the enlightened words of Benjamin Franklin…“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are”

No one is above the law…not even the sheriff

There needs to be communication, confidence, and trust between citizens and law enforcement.  These things must be restored. It would be so nice to believe that everyone is always telling the truth, and that there is no ugliness in this world, but do any of us really believe that?  I know it would be nice to pretend that is how it is, but if we try to fool ourselves into believing a lie does that really mean it’s true?

Today’s news – FORMER LASD SHERIFF LEE BACA WILL PLEAD GUILTY (click on links below to read news articles)

Good officers need to be supported by good leadership, when there is corruption, not only do citizens pay, but so do all the good law enforcement officers…and their job is hard enough as it is.  So I applaud our federal agents for stepping in and putting together this case.  I also applaud the U.S. attorney’s office for proceeding with this case, as well as the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs for weighing in with their support.

“Former Sheriff Lee Baca deserves punishment for the charge he pled guilty to today,” said George Hofstetter, President of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs. “The plea agreement sends a strong message that no one is above the law. There must be zero tolerance for this type of failed leadership.

Here is a link to the Los Angeles CBS article http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2016/02/10/former-la-county-sheriff-lee-baca-to-plead-guilty-to-charge-of-lying-to-feds/

Seven former LASD deputies, sergeants and lieutenants were convicted in 2014 for their roles in the operations.  Today it was announced that former Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca is to plead guilty in this federal investigation case in which Baca would now be the 18th former member of the department convicted in the case, according to U.S attorney’s spokesman Thom Mrozek.

“Baca’s guilty plea “demonstrates that the illegal behavior in the Sheriff’s Department went to the very top of this organization,” said Eileen Decker, U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, at a news conference Wednesday.. “More importantly, it illustrates that those who foster and then try to hide a corrupt culture will be held accountable.”

So for anyone that still wants to “pretend” that everything they read in the police reports “has to be true” and that nothing corrupt could ever be going on in law enforcement, I would like you to please know that it does happen, it is not right, and if you truly care about the good officers you will never stand by and pretend corruption does not exist – it does exist, it is illegal, and when it is discovered it must be prosecuted.

Support law enforcement by standing behind those who really do uphold the law in this country, and not behind those who abuse their power.  Because the good officers are the ones that deserve our support, not the power hungry, corrupt individuals, or the weak foot soldiers that follow in order to rise up in the ranks…let us all support truth and justice, not corruption and lies.

The Holly Moore Case…

holly moore

Below is a link to the Crime Watch Daily video report on the Holly Moore case, out of Castle Rock, CO.  19 year old Holly’s manner of death, yet another young woman like Morgan, was not properly investigated, nor was the evidence properly tested so her official manner of death has been deemed a suicide instead of a homicide.  I have posted about this case before.  This case reminds me so much of Morgan’s case.  Why do some coroner’s in Colorado, like in Morgan’s case, stand by the wrong manner of death in a case that has strong evidence that it was a capital crime? It makes no sense to me.  The coroner in Holly’s case, just as in Morgan’s case, is not a doctor, he had someone else do the autopsy.  Things that should have been tested were not.  Other strong experts brought in by the family proved there was evidence this was most likely a murder and yet the coroner would not change their ruling…this is so very wrong!!!

At least in Holly’s case the pressure brought by her family has finally resulted in the police chief turning the case over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.  Please watch this updated information about the Holly Moore case.

Stalkers Never Stop…

moon

I recently read this article that was emailed to me.  It caught my eye for obvious reasons…it was about a speech given by Rhonda Saunders, from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office Stalking & Threat Assessment Team & Los Angeles Stalking Task Force.

She warned the CLU audience, “One thing I know about stalkers is they never stop.”

As part of the educational process, as well as raising awareness about the seriousness and dangers of stalking, I wanted to share this article with you.  I agree with Saunders 100% – she said:

“What these stalkers do is destroy any sense of security,” she said.

“It’s a crime of mental terrorism.”

Unless you have been a victim of stalking you would have a hard time understanding the damage that occurs.  I hope you never are a victim of stalking, but I know many of you that are reading this have been, or currently are victims of stalking, and if so you know exactly what she means. You are always looking over your shoulder, you don’t know where to turn, you wonder when the moment will arrive when something terrible will happen and you may not see it coming…it is mental terrorism!

Stalking is the most under reported crime in the US at this time.

60 percent don’t report it.

“Either they feel embarrassed or they feel like, ‘I can handle this,’ ” Saunders said.
